Directed by Jeff Fowler (in his feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, it stars Ben Schwartz (Sonic the Hedgehog), Jim Carrey (Dr. Robotnik), James Marsden (Thomas Michael "Tom" Wachowski), and Tika Sumpter (Maddie Wachowski). The film is based on the Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise published by Sega.

The plot follows the iconic Sega video game character Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) who is on the run in rural Montana from Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Robotnik wants to steal Sonic's supersonic speed powers to take over the world. With the help of local cop Tom "Donut Lord" Wachowski (James Marsden), Sonic takes off to evade his captor.

Sonic the Hedgehog has been an iconic character since the early 90s and this film has been a long time coming. The film was probably better served as a complete animated film and it can only service a very basic plot for so long. The character is well created and offers a lot for the entire family. Watching Carrey is an absolute delight. His performance helps take Sonic the Hedgehog to levels of laughing you never expected. This is a fun film which doesn't go into much depth. Overall it's not a family film that will wow you with originality, but it is one that will entertain all audiences watching, including fans of the original gaming franchise. It may not be particularly memorable, but in an era where family-friendly movies like Paddington can be a hit across all audiences, Sonic more than manages to hold its own.

Sonic the Hedgehog is now available on Digital and Blu-ray.
